Alhambra is a great place to live in, and its people like Sylvia and Jim
Manley that make Alhambra so great.
Sylvia is an elderly woman in her early 70's, Sylvia has been through
Kemo Therapy and even though she may need some help herself she still does
plenty for others. Her husband Jim is in his early 70's too, and has supported
her every step of the way. He always does his best to help her.
Sylvia and jim have two dogs, their names are Annie and Richie. Annie
was a homeless dog and during the summer about ten years ago, she was
walking slowly around hungry and thirsty. Sylvia felt sorry for her and gave
her a bowl of water. She kept doing this for weeks and she decided to put up
signs, but still no one claimed her. So now annie is Jim and Sylvia's dog. They
also have a dog named Richie, they found him lying in the bushes he was
starving, and had some cuts on him. It took months for that dog to earn
Sylvia's trust, he eventually did and they kept him too.
They also help out by taking people that are in their 80's and 90's
grocery shopping, and to pick up medicine and to doctors appointments.
Sylvia is someone you can depend on, she's always here for you. She
used to go to a school on Marengo and Meridian, it is no longer there.
She has lived in Alhambra 71 years, all her life.
She also baby sits new animals for people when there gone on vacation or sick.
Sylvia is very nice to children. She tells us interesting stories about her
life in Alhambra, and how it used to be. I would think she would be sad
because of all the changes, but she knows that change is good. Through her
stories she keeps the memories of Alhambra alive.
So in conclusion, Sylvia does not get any recognition for what she does,
and she doesn't look for it, what She does comes from her heart. She is just an
ordinary person who cares about other people and does what she can to help.
People like Sylvia are the people who make Alhambra a great place to
Live.
